The Challenge
At one of the UK’s largest supermarkets chilled storage centres, there are two twin screw compressors operating 24×7, to ensure the temperature within the storage and packaging facility is maintained within a controlled range.
Prior to Tan Delta being involved with this client, a catastrophic failure occurred on one of the two compressors, costing many thousands of pounds.
After continuous problems in this area, it was decided they needed to find a better solution and implement a live condition based monitoring system, incorporating all the best monitoring techniques available today.
Tan Delta was contacted to look at this application and propose a system that could continuously monitor these critical chiller motors and compressors.
Solution
Tan Delta worked closely with the engineering team on-site to examine all of the potential methods for monitoring these assemblies.
It was quickly concluded that regular oil sampling would give a good indication of the condition of the critical compressors, however it would not be practical or cost effective.
Benefits
Tan Delta suggested the installation of their patented Oil Quality Sensor (OQSx) which would continuously monitor the overall oil condition and oil temperature.
The sensor was wired back into the “MachineGuard” data logging and communication system, enabling the Oil Quality Sensor (OQSx) and the client to set warning and alarm levels within the system.
The Oil Quality Sensor (OQSx) has environmental benefits, reducing the need for harmful and expensive oil changes, allows “Just In Time” maintenance to be realised.
